Total Cost Area - Market Price Below Average Variable Cost

   The shaded area on the graph to the right is the total cost of producing Q*. It is clearly much greater than the total revenue for this level of output, so the firm is incurring losses.

   What we need to show now is that the losses from shutting down in the short run are smaller than these losses.
