   The shaded area is the fixed cost for this firm. (Remember it doesn't matter what Q is for computing fixed costs.) This area represents the losses suffered by the firm if it shuts down in the short run.

   A quick look at the previous graph will verify that this is smaller than the losses incurred if the firm stays in business.
