Increasing her movie consumption beyond MO would put her on the portion of the compensated budget below her original indifference curve making her worse off (shaded area). Since we made sure she could afford MO on the compensated budget she would either consume MO or fewer movies.

   The substitution effect is always negative. If price increases consumption falls due to the substitution effect; if price falls consumption rises due to the substitution effect.
