The graph to the right shows the income effect alone. It is now easy to see that ramen noodles are an inferior good for our consumer. She purchases fewer on the new budget constraint than she did on the compensated budget. As income rises quantity demanded falls, our definition of an inferior good.

   Because ramen noodles are an inferior good for this consumer the income and substitution effects work in opposite directions.
