To the right we see the pure income effect for potatoes for this consumer. Not only is this good inferior, but the income effect is so large that it overwhelms the substitution effect.

   Since most goods seem to have downward sloping demands in practice, Giffen goods are probably very rare. However, if they do exist they are inferior goods for which the income effect is larger in absolute value than the substitution effect.
