A similar shift out in demand would arise if carpenters became more productive, even if the overall demand for housing didn't change. Remember, demand for a factor is its MRP, the product of marginal revenue and marginal product. If marginal product increases it's like production costs fall leading profit maximizing firms to increase output and hire more inputs.

    Once again the wages paid to carpenters and the numbers hired would both increase.
