Monopsonies may be fairly common in small towns where large firms may situate a manufacturing facility thus becoming the primarly employer in the area. Firms locating manufacturing operations in developing countries may also be monopsonists.

Monopsony like behavior may result from collusion among firms, particularly when labor costs are a high proportion of total costs.
