A change in demand in perfect competition leads to short run profits or losses for the individual firms in the industry. These short run profits or losses lead to entry or exit, respectively, until the industry returns to the original price.

In long run equilibrium in perfect competition, market price is determined solely by production costs and will always be the minimum of ATC. Demand only determines the number of firms in the industry and therefore, the total industry output.
