Many students tell me that one of the reasons they look forward
to graduating and working full time is that they will no longer
have to eat ramen noodles. For students who feel this way, ramen
noodles are an inferior good. This means that the income elasticity
for these students will be negative, as income goes up they will
buy fewer ramen noodles as they can afford more preferred foods.
(This is not a value judgment about ramen noodles, only an observation
about consumption patterns.)
