Profits are the fundamental incentive for businesses and, as we will learn, an understanding of the profit motive enables us to explain and predict the behavior of profit maximizing firms in a wide variety of circumstances.

   We define profit as the difference between revenue and costs. Thus, a clear understading of production costs is vital to understanding and prediting how profit motivated firms react to changes in the economic environment.
