Suppose the firm substituted labor for captial until it reached a point like F. This would mean it had gone too far in substituting labor for captial so that the following would hold:

    At F the rate at which labor substitutes for capital while maintaining output is less than the market rate. The firm will save money and maintain production by reducing its workforce and increase the amount of capital it uses.
