If the fee for using tennis courts, or the cost of tennis club memberships increases, the demand for tennis balls falls to D2. Fewer tennis balls will be demanded at every price.

In a sense, complementary goods are almost a single good in terms of their enjoyment (even if they are purchased separately). Therefore, the effect can be important. If you can't afford to get onto a tennis court, you will have little use for tennis balls. Likewise, why buy CDs if you can't afford a stereo.
