For example, usually the most highly paid University employees
are the staff at the Medical School (if there is one). Often the
Dean of the Medical School earns more than the President or Chancellor
because the forgone income of an outstanding physician is very
high. At the same time, that same physician could probably earn
far more in private practice, but probably enjoys the security,
prestige and academic climate afforded by the University.
Likewise, similar jobs may pay higher in harsher climates or when
working conditions are more unpleasant or dangerous.
