Most of the relationships studied in economics only consider positive values of the variables of interest. Such graphs are so common that economists often only show the upper right portion of the Cartesian coordinate system when illustrating these relationships.

   To the right we show this portion of the coordinate system highlighted in blue. Throughout this text, most of the graphs will show only this portion of the coordinate system.
