Dilemmas such as these may seem contrived, but in fact they exist in many very real situations. Indeed you probably face several of these daily without being aware. Take the trash game shown to the right.

   Everyone enjoys living in a trash-free world, but no one enjoys the efforts that are necessary to achieve this. If everyone but Player 1 recycles and otherwise properly disposes of trash, Player 1 can still litter and not recycle and live in a relatively clean world since her small amount won't make much difference. If everyone else , Player 2, is a pig with their trash, then it doesn't matter what Player 1 does, her small amount won't make any difference again.
